Steel-fortune heir John "Jay" Phipps promised his wife a country estate to rival her childhood home—England's thousand-year old historical milestone and landmark, Battle Abbey.

Built in 1906 by the English designer George A. Crawley, the magnificent Charles II-style mansion is nestled amid 150 acres, featuring carefully planned formal gardens and landscaped grounds interspersed with woodlands, ponds and lakes. It is furnished with fine English antiques and decorative arts.

Privately-owned Belcourt is special among all the amazing Newport mansions. There is a whole different feeling when you explore a castle where someone actually lives. The Tinney's collection of artifacts from thirty-two countries includes stained glass windows dating from the 13th century. The mansion also includes an Italian banquet hall and English Tudor library. Authentic details include the large hump in the library floor, built as in the Tudor period, to prevent the devil from getting sure footing.

Theme Tours make Belcourt quite distinctive. The Camelot Tour, celebrated in song by the RI Touring Ensemble, begins in Belcourt Castle's palatial Banquet Hall with King Arthur singing the virtues of Camelot. English style mini meat pies, fruits, cheeses, breads and dainty desserts are presented "medieval style". But there is also a Royal Medieval or Renaissance Banquet complete with authentic menu, everyone in costume, and troubadours singing period music. How many chances do you get to tour a castle by candlelight? It's hard to choose between them all, including the Silver Tea and Coffee Tours. Call ahead for reservations.
